pleased to meet you: varvara stepanova

fun facts

Varvara was a Russian artist born in Lithuania (b.1894-d.1958).

in 1919 she became involved with the Futurist poets, composing poems and collages.

after the revolution she worked at the Museums Office of the Department of Fine Arts and taught at the Academy of Social Education.

in 1922 she designed the set and costumes for Meyerhold's production of Sukhovo-Kobylin's Smert' Tarelkina (The Death of Tarelkin). the costumes were simple geometric shapes in two colors.

using this same geometric style, she produced textiles designs for The First State Textile Print Factory.

a simple, well-done geo print can go a long way and her color choices add extra interest to her designs.
do you like her simplistic style? would you wear her designs on a piece of clothing?
my vote would be yes.

pleased to meet you: susan bosence

fun facts

susan (b. 1913-1996) was headmaster's secretary at the Dartington Hall School in England where she was introduced to the hand blocked textiles of Barron and Larcher by the owners of the Dartington estate.

she met Dorothy Larcher and Phyllis Barron when she was 37. no doubt giving her a boost of encouragement with her work.

her earliest experiments with textile design involved resist dyeing with indigo.

she taught a class on printing and dyeing textiles in the 1960s.

she wrote Hand Block Print and Resist Dyeing in 1985. would love to get my hands on this book! anyone want to let me borrow it? :)

I really like the handmade feel her prints have, especially the checkered plaid (#5).

natural dye class @ shelter half

missi and I were lucky enough to catch the last night of Mid Summer Nights Crafts held at Shelter Half in LA. the workshop focused on natural plant dyeing and shibori techniques.
the lovely Krissy Morrison from colour plantae taught the class and it was so much fun!

I think it's safe to say that we're hooked...

in the kitchen: simple margaritas

is 9am too early for a cocktail recipe?

I keep coming back to this recipe because of the simple ingredients.
margarita mix isn't really my thing.
it'd also be fun to play around with different flavored liqueurs and citrus juices, I might try blood orange.

fall trend (pt. 2)

geometrics with an almost dizzying affect (in the best way).

traditional ethnic textiles make everything cozy for the colder months.

dark and sultry with a little Baroque mixed in.

dye treatments and graphics with Asian influences.

see part one here or on our website (under the 'trend' tab)

while we were out : the Met (part 1)

a couple weeks ago Brian and Missi went to NYC for appointments and managed to escape
the heat for a bit inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
they took some pictures to share...
1. Anni Albers weaving. she's rad, you should check. her. out. she was a bauhaus babe.
2. + 3. ethnic patterns that I want made into pillows. ;)
4. love the colors on this Peruvian feather dress from the 12th century (!)
5. the technique on this pattern is pretty cool
6. chevron box

have you been to the Met recently? last time I was there I was 12... I think it's about time for a trip back.

more next week !

fall trend

our new trend pages are up on our website! (under the 'trend' tab) I've always had a thing for a good mood board...

the military vibe is still marching along - and I don't mind it one bit.

let's go to the mountains and pack our best angling gear.

bohemian with a nuanced twist. yes, please.

this is just a taste, I'll post the rest tomorrow (or you can go to our website and take a look!)

La Vigna, 1957 + a crazy colored geo print from our collection (one of my many favorites)

we have lots more vintage inspiration on our pinterest page !

Stormy Monday Brand (via Coolhunting)

"California Cutters" (via Coolhunting)
Close friend of the birds, Neil Harrison, has created a brand called Stormy Monday, which breathes new life into scrap lumber and discarded skateboards. Re-claimed. Re-glued. Re-shaped. Re-imagined. The current line, which includes skateboards, cutting boards, and even a tool-carry is available at Shelter Half in Los Angeles. Whether you are shredding cabbage or shredding the gnar, Stormy Monday has you covered. Keep an eye out for more products on the stormy horizon. Surfboards. Denim. Get on board (so to speak).
