pleased to meet you: Sonia Delaunay

Sonia Delaunay's (1885-1979) work is expressed though abstract painting, theater and film, graphics, interiors, fashion and textiles. She was born in the Ukraine and settled in Paris in 1905. For years she was only known for being Robert Delaunay's wife and her work was virtually ignored by early art historians. Thank goodness times have changed! Her talent needs to be shown off.

Bold and colorful, some of her paintings have a slightly cubist feel (it's also interesting to note that her and Robert's aesthetic seemed very similar). During the Russian Revolution, she started her commercial career designing fabrics, carpets, tapestries and also clothes. Shortly before her death in 1979 she had this to say: "I have lead three lives: one for Robert, one for my son and grandsons and a shorter one for myself. I don't regret not having given myself more attention. I really did not have the time".

There is an exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC until June 19th, if you're in the area.

p.s. remember this Sonia post
