Arthur Dove

"Sunrise I" 1936

Arthur Dove went to Cornell University and went onto be a well known commercial artist in NYC. He later moved to Paris with his wife and joined a group of experimental artists from the United States. Upon his return to the U.S., he met Alfred Stieglitz and with his support Dove produced what are known as the 1st purely abstract paintings to come out of America. Georgia O'Keeffe, who was married to Stieglitz, took much inspiration from Arthur Dove. It is crazy to think that most of us have never heard of him even though he was America's 1st abstract painter.
